Mama lost her job

It's always felt like the right thing to do to--honestly communicate what's going on to my daughter. When her dad and I split up I made sure to tell her how much we both loved her but I also was honest and let her know he and I were not going to get back together. It was painful but over the past two years I feel like my honesty has enabled me to become a better parent and gain my little girl's trust. This month I was laid off my job.

What's a baby sitter worth these days?

I ran across this conversation on Advice Smackdown and it got me thinking: what does one pay for a babysitter these days? The $10 per hour figure seems awfully low, but I know when my kids were little (and gas prices were under a dollar) the rate was more like $5. What's it cost these days, and are baby sitters as hard to find as they used to be?

Another apology.

I was venting to this guy that I work with about how I was so stressed. Mostly about how I had taken on this project for a client and it was causing me to miss the last few weeks I had with my daughter before she went to college.

He said, in all honesty, "She's your step-daughter right? Well, it's not like you're her real Mom."

Just wondering, what's the general opinion about kids and summer jobs? Is a 14er too young, should they be allowed to enjoy the care-free fun of summer days before becoming enslaved in the work-force like the rest of us? What about 16?
