Cleaning causes headaches
Am I the only one who ends up with a headache from cleaning the bathrooms, especially the inside one? I think its a shame that after cleaning the house you have to leave it just to get away from the fumes. More importantly, any cleaning must be done when my son is in school or away with family so that he's not exposed to these chemicals. My husband, who has athsma, insists on using ammonia to clean our wood floor which means I have to leave the house because of the smell. There's got to be a better way to clean wood floors.

A good sweeping, than a damp (not wringing wet) mop is usually all you need on wood floors. Ammonia is bad stuff, and completely unnecessary unless you are trying to kill something, such as yourself. It also reacts with many types of wood and can discolor it. If your husband thinks ammonia is good for his asthma, I can tell him, as a fellow sufferer, that it isn't. It also isn't cleaning up anything else that triggers it. Best thing you can do to really keep wood floors clean is put door mats out and ask people to wipe their feet.
I love Mrs. Meyers, especially the lavender and rose geranium scents. You can use her all purpose cleaner (diluted in water) on wood floors. The whole entire house smells so good when I clean. Sometimes in the bathroom I have to go for the hardstuff, but not every time. I notice that after not having it for a while, Target is back to carrying Myers. Or you can get it at co-ops, whole foods, etc.
Target makes a wood floor cleaner--actually, maybe it's Method brand--but it has the most delicious cherry-almond scent. It's like bathing your house in Amaretto. I even put it in lattes. no.
Doesn't it seem odd that we feel we have to "clean" with strong chemicals to rid ourselves of germs or dirt or noseeums? I'm not sure that applying a level of chemicals to a surface make the place more inhabitable for humans. In fact, I think the things that come out of labs and test tubes might be more harmful than the germs and bacterias that our bodies are more equipped to battle.
I am an Educator with the Center of Education for Children's Health and the Environment. We do daily ONLINE presentations on the effects of chemicals and our children. Did you know that because of chemical exposure, the birth rate of male babies has drastically declined? Email me, and I will send you an invite to our next ONLINE presentation. We discuss alternatives to chemicals, and other interesting facts! cechemom@gmail.com
Kudos to you for being concerned!
I use only Melaleuca products in my home. They are safer and do not have the toxins of the some of the other cleaners. Their bleach smells like flowers! It doesnt choke you to death. Their products are also good to clean house where people have asthma and allergies. E-mail me if you would like more information.
